Add Existing Material ( Modeling )

Tool summary :

  • Adds an existing material to a member. Select the member, locate points, then select the existing material by its submaterial mark.
  • This help page also discusses how to add existing material as a miscellaneous member. F2 can be used to add an existing material AS a member. F3 as well as the icon shown above can be used to add existing material TO a member.
  • An existing material can be any material that has been added to the 3D model. An existing material can also be a standard piecemark (defined under Help > Project Settings > Fabricator > Piecemarking ) -- even if that material has not yet been placed in the model. Regardless of whether you add the existing material TO a member or AS a member, the list of submaterial marks that opens for you to select the existing material includes all materials in the model plus all standard piecemarks.

To add existing material To a member :

VIDEO Add Existing Material is used to add a clip angle with the submaterial mark a3 to connect a stair stringer to a beam. A p3 shear tab from the Standard Shear Plates window is used to connect the other stair stringer. (Recorded in SDS2 Detailing , v7.3.)
  1. In Modeling , click the icon above and select the member you want to add the material to. An alternative: Instead of clicking the icon, you can press F3 and select " Existing Material " under " Other " on the Material Type Selection window:
  2. Locate two points in the model to establish the longitudinal axis of the material. The actual length of the material is its existing length, and that is not changed by the locataion of the the two points. The first point that you locate sets the placement of the left-end point of the material.

  3. On the submaterial mark selection dialog that opens, double-click the material mark of the material you want to add.
  4. Rotate the material into place.
  5. Locate the material dimension reference point
  6. Right-click ( Return ) if you are done adding instances of the existing material you selected.

  7. If the member you added the material to has the same piecemark as other members in the model, the Add Material - Options dialog opens, giving you options for adding the material to those other members.

To add existing material AS a legacy miscellaneous member :

  1. In Modeling , press F2 > on the Member Type Selection window, check the box for " Miscellaneous steel " then double-click " Miscellaneous -- Existing Material "
  2. Left-click ( Locate ) two points in the model to define the member line of the legacy miscellaneous member.

  3. On the submaterial mark selection dialog that opens, double-click the material you want to place.
  4. Rotate the material into place.
  5. Right-click ( Return ) if you are done adding miscellaneous members.
